Meta* confirmed to TechCrunch the work on the new application, but did not specify when it wants to present it. It will be a decentralized social network for text messaging.
The code name is P92, while the social network is under development, sources told MoneyControl. You can log in to the application under the Instagram*-profile credentials. The service will support the ActivityPub protocol, the publication found out. The same one uses Mastodon.
The project is led by the head of Instagram* Adam Mosseri, found out Platformer. The company has engaged a legal department to investigate possible privacy issues with the application.
Mastodon, a decentralized communication platform, attracted half a million new users after Elon Musk joined Twitter in November 2022. In two months, the number of its users has grown from 300 thousand to 2.5 million. In December, the founder of the service, Yevgeny Rochko, said that he refused five investment firms so that the service would remain independent.
Meta* has tried to create services with technologies that have become popular before. TechCrunch listed several experiments that the company eventually abandoned: an anonymous application for teenagers tbh, Super — for communicating with stars, Tuned — for couples, a social network for Campus students, a service of quick video acquaintance Sparked and Lasso — a clone of TikTok.
